Study Task 5: Where am I now? - A Visual Evaluation

Progressive map / visual evaluation example

I have recently come across this map, illustrator unknown. I really like the way the road, although cliche - adds motion and direction to this piece as well as a really unified composition and aesthetic. I also like the media choice adding such bright colours to the piece and I plan on creating my illustrations for this task using watercolour in a similar way. I haven't had much experience using this media - but all the more reason to give it a shot!

Critical Evaluation

I found this task really quite difficult in terms of trying to communicate the journey I have undergone from the beginning of the year until now - especially because I feel I am still learning and becoming used to being at university. I am, however, improving upon my mistakes and seeing more positive outcomes within my practice recently, and the way I live and work generally compared to the start of this course, which I have tried to communicate through the collection of these water colours. The dry brush sweep marking in the background represents my fluidity and movement through the year, which has been a bit all over the place at times, touching on all the points I have tried to include. I am worried this poster is less of a map and more of a collection of vignettes which is why I feel the dry brush marking strengthens the poster overall. This has been a good task for reflection and I feel conveys where I am right now in my practice, uni life and personal life (with lack of sleep and constantly reminding myself to eat healthily for example). I aim to use more watercolour in the future, as this has been the first time using it in a finished piece of work and I am pleased with the outcome and the soft subtle colours that this media brings to the final piece.
